The ELY4OFF project of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation wins the National Energy Globe Award Spain

The Vice-President and Minister of Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development of the Government of Aragon, Arturo Aliaga, has received the diploma accrediting the award as President of the Foundation. The main objective of this initiative is the development and demonstration of an autonomous, off-grid electrolysis system linked to renewable energy sources
Aliaga receives the Globe Hydrogen Award.

The “Energy Globe”, the World Sustainability Award organised by the independent foundation Energy Globe in Austria, is today the most recognised environmental award in the world. The Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon has been awarded the National Energy Globe Award Spain 2020, a prestigious worldwide environmental award from the independent Austrian foundation Energy Globe.

The Vice President and Minister of Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development of the Government of Aragon, Arturo Aliaga, has congratulated all project partners and especially the team of the Foundation, and has recalled “the interest that hydrogen technologies have aroused, in which Aragon is at the head of Europe thanks to the work of the Hydrogen Aragon Foundation and a dynamic industrial network that has been working for years in this field. He also highlighted the presence of this project in the Walqa Technology Park “fixing Europe’s attention at a time when the economy is clearly moving towards decarbonisation and we must generate new jobs related to sustainability”.

ELY4OFF explores the enormous potential of hydrogen production using PEM water electrolysers (PEMWE) to become a key technology in the deployment of hydrogen and fuel cells (HFCs) in the future energy market. The final objective is to find an energy storage system capable of supplying hydrogen for different applications, thus achieving a high penetration of renewable energy sources.

The project was implemented from April 2016 to September 2019. The last seven months were dedicated to the demonstration of a system developed under the premises of the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon that has continuously produced green hydrogen that has been used, among other applications, in the hydrogen plant located in its facilities for the refuelling of several fuel cell vehicles within the H2PiyR project. Once the project has been completed, the systems continue to operate to collect data on performance in extreme climatic conditions.

The Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon has coordinated the project and, together with the other partners (ITM, CEA and Inycom and Epic Power, the latter two also from Aragon), has participated in all the work packages. Its activity was mainly focused on the establishment of requirements for the integration of the PEMWE in the demonstrator (in the Foundation’s facilities), the study and validation of the peripheral systems to the electrolyser, the commissioning of the PEMWE, the subsequent implementation of the demonstration plan and the development of a dissemination and awareness plan aimed at the interested parties both in the European Union and internationally.

The “Energy Globe”, the World Sustainability Award organised by the independent foundation Energy Globe in Austria, is today the most recognised environmental award in the world. The national winners share the idea that the environment is not protected by words but by actions.

In 2019, more than 180 nations participated in this award, which is open to all types of projects whose mission is to preserve the environment.
