When a town with such a strong industrial and energy tradition as Sabiñánigo asks how new hydrogen technologies fit into its productive structure, the conversation is worthwhile.
The General Director of Industrial Promotion and Innovation, Mar Paños, participated in the conference “Energy Challenges and Opportunities for the Alto Aragon Industry” organized by the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, with the collaboration of Sabiñánigo City Council and the Alto Gállego Pyrenees Business Association.
The objective of the meeting was clear: to analyze the challenges and opportunities that energy, and more specifically, hydrogen technologies, currently offer to the industry.
Companies, experiences, and real projects
The session brought together managers from companies based in Sabiñánigo and other parts of the Huesca province with the technical team of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation to exchange experiences and learn about innovative projects for generating green hydrogen (produced from renewable resources) and decarbonizing industrial processes.
Participating companies included DH2Energy and Ercros, which are part of the Board of Trustees of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation and have hydrogen projects underway.
Elena Simón, Director of the Ercros factory in Sabiñánigo, presented two initiatives developed by the company in the town within the framework of Ercros’ 3D Strategic Plan:
- Semi-industrial pilot plant for green hydrogen production
Using electrolysis with renewable energy, this facility represents a concrete commitment to clean H₂ production.
- Dual burner (Natural Gas / Hydrogen)
Installed in a steam boiler, it allows hydrogen to be used to generate energy, achieving an estimated saving of 1,400 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
The Hy4AR Project: Strategic positioning of hydrogen in Aragon
The Aragon Hydrogen Foundation presented the Hy4AR project, which seeks to boost the strategic positioning of logistics, aeronautical, and industrial companies in Aragón and analyze the current and future demand for hydrogen for its adoption in these sectors as a sustainable energy vector.
It is not just about discussing hydrogen in the abstract, but about understanding the real needs of the Aragonese industrial sectors and how H₂ can respond to them in a viable way.
Institutional representation
Institutional representation was provided by:
- Berta Fernández, Mayor of Sabiñánigo
- Mar Paños, Vice President of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation and General Director of Industrial Promotion and Innovation of the Government of Aragon
- Lidia Ferrer Labay, manager of the Alto Gállego Pyrenees Business Association
- José María Santa Bárbara, Managing Director of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation
From conversation to project
Conferences like this fulfill an essential function: connecting companies with an industrial tradition with new energy technologies, not from theory, but from projects already underway and experiences that can be replicated.
Sabiñánigo has a consolidated industrial base. And now it also has concrete examples of how hydrogen can be integrated into its decarbonization processes.
The Aragon Hydrogen Foundation will continue to promote these meetings because we believe that hydrogen advances when those who need it talk to those who know how to implement it.
