PROJECTSHIGH2-FURNACES

HIGH2-Furnaces

HYBRIDIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL FURNACES FOR HIGH H2 REPLACEMENT RATES
May 2023 - April 2024

SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVES

The HigH2-Furnaces project pursues the development of hybrid hydrogen furnaces with high substitution rates in an industrial environment. The main advantage is that CO2 (greenhouse gas) is no longer emitted but H2O (harmless gas) as a result of the combustion products of natural gas (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) respectively, complying with the principles of decarbonization set by the European Union. The main objective of the HigH2-Furnaces project is to continue the research and development started in the previous project 3H2 (AEI-010500-2022-23) about the most critical aspects related to the use of green hydrogen and natural gas mixtures on the use of industrial furnaces, as well as the digitalization and automation of the combustion process. For this purpose, different hydrogen substitution rates up to 80% (and their evaluation to reach 100% hydrogen) will be tested in three different types of furnaces. This entails the redesign of the three types of furnaces, their construction, installation and commissioning to make them suitable for working with these fuel mixtures, as well as carrying out the complete experimental phase in each of them to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this technology.

FOUNDATION ROLE

The role of Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón in this project is to lead the technical-economic evaluation of H2 supply options in different substitution scenarios, considering both external supply and production in a mobile unit in situ. In addition to maintaining a very close collaboration with Kalfrisa to advise and support them in other aspects related to hydrogen, the options for integration of photovoltaics in energy hub in cemeteries will be analyzed and other hydrogen generation technologies compatible with the needs of the project will be evaluated.
