Project H2MAC: Advancing Industrial Decarbonization and Heavy Machinery Transformation

The Aragon Hydrogen Foundation validates the viability and safety of high-power propulsion systems in harsh environments for industrial decarbonization.

How can we decarbonize those industrial sectors where conventional batteries are simply not enough due to severe operational demands? Heavy machinery used in mining and construction requires technological solutions with extremely high energy density, capable of maintaining performance in extreme situations without generating polluting emissions.

The European project H2MAC was born precisely to mark a historic milestone in the transformation of this non-road mobile machinery. Through a powerful strategic alliance in Aragon, led by ITA (Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón), backed by ANMOPYC, and with the active participation of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (FHa), we are projecting our region’s knowledge toward an international market in the midst of an energy transition.

Technological Milestones on the Ground: Excavator and Crusher under Evaluation

The heart of H2MAC is a propulsion system based on heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cells, whose behavior is being validated directly in real and harsh operational scenarios through two key applications:

  • Modified Excavator (120 kW): Protagonist of one of the world’s first demonstrations in a real and severe environment. This unit breaks away from conventional workshop testing to prove that zero-emission heavy machinery can execute high-demand tasks while keeping its operational capacity intact against adverse environmental conditions.

  • High-Capacity Crusher (240 kW): Taking a quantitative leap in power and scale, this industrial equipment integrates a 240 kW fuel cell. The real challenge lies in its field validation plan: a continuous operation window of 1,000 working hours under the most demanding terrain conditions. A definitive trial by fire to consolidate market confidence in the commercial viability of hydrogen as an energy vector.

The Strategic Contribution of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation

The participation of the FHa is critical to ensuring that these cutting-edge developments make a safe and efficient transition from the prototype phase to real market exploitation. Our contribution to the project is articulated across three fundamental operational axes:

  1. Logistics and Safe Supply: Detailed definition of the supply chain and safety protocols for the provisioning and handling of green hydrogen in industrial environments.

  2. Technical Support in Testing: Specialized guidance and technical monitoring during the critical phase of the 1,000-hour continuous operation pilot test.

  3. Profitable Business Models: Co-creation of financial and operational strategies that guarantee economic viability and return on investment (ROI) of this technological shift for operating companies.

Technological Validation: The Bridge Between R&D Prototype and the Commercial Market

Developing hydrogen technology is only the first step; the true industrial challenge consists of guaranteeing its safety, durability, and efficiency under international regulations. The laboratories, test benches, and engineering team of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation provide the necessary technical environment to mitigate technological risks and certify systems before their definitive deployment in the market.
