Europe secures the strategy for 25 Hydrogen Valleys in Brussels
The future of European energy sovereignty has taken a decisive step toward industrial maturity. In a strategic “closed-door” meeting reserved exclusively for the coordinators of the continent’s most disruptive projects, the roadmap to guarantee the viability of the 25 Hydrogen Valleys funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (CHP) has been defined.
The Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (FHa) played a key technical leadership role in this forum. Represented by Alberto Herranz, Technical Consultant, the Foundation contributed the expertise gained from BIG HIT—the pioneering valley in the Orkney Islands whose successful completion now serves as an operational manual for the billion-euro investments entering the sector.
The hydrogen market: from Laboratory to heavy industry
The high-level technical and financial debate focused on regional infrastructure resilience and the urgency of securing demand. According to the workshop’s conclusions, the success of European decarbonization depends on “securing” the trust of offtakers (end-users) through three pillars:
-
Regulatory Stability: A legal framework that eliminates uncertainty for major capital.
-
OpEx Support: Public support during the operational phase to stabilize $H_{2}$ prices against fossil fuels.
-
Strategic Scalability: The integration of valleys based on their production capacity.
Strategic map of the 25 CHP Valleys
The European network is structured into two critical scales based on annual production capacity:
Large-Scale Valleys (>4,000 tonnes/year)
The engines of cross-border and regional infrastructure:
-
HEAVENN: Northern Netherlands (Pioneer).
-
NAHV (North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley): Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.
-
BalticSeaH2: Finland-Estonia corridor.
-
IMAGHyNE: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France.
-
HI2 Valley: Austria (Carinthia, Styria, Upper Austria).
-
CyLH2Valley: Castile and León, Spain.
-
HiWhyV: Sweden (West and High Coast).
-
NORHyWAY: Central Norway.
-
LtA (Lower Thames Area): UK (Bradford, Leeds, Humber).
Small-Scale Valleys (>500 tonnes/year)
Innovation nodes and high-efficiency local applications:
-
BIG-HIT: Orkney Islands, UK (FHa Leadership – Completed).
-
GreenHysland: Mallorca, Spain.
-
TRIERES & CRAVE-H2: Greece.
-
TH2ICINO: Lombardy, Italy.
-
LuxHyVal: Luxembourg.
-
H2tALENT: Portugal.
-
Other key nodes: SH2AMROCK (IE), HYSouthMarmara (TR), ZAHYR (BG), CONVEY (DK), AdvancedH2Valley (FR), HySPARK (PL), EASTGATEH2V (SK), Hyceland (IS), H2B-IMPACT (DE).
