Aragon Hydrogen Foundation announces the successful culmination of the European project LIFE ZERO ENERGY MOD (Zero Energy Habitable Mobile Modules in Europe), a pioneering initiative coordinated by our entity that, after four years of intense work, has demonstrated the viability of creating habitable modules with total energy autonomy.
Funded by the prestigious Life Programme of the European Union, this project was born with the aim of developing a robust solution integrating Passivhaus principles, renewable energies, and hydrogen to provide habitability and energy autonomy in remote locations or those lacking grid backup.
As project coordinators, we have led a consortium formed by distinguished partners: the Centro Universitario de la Defensa, B-Haus (specializing in Passivhaus construction), and ARPA EMC (with extensive experience in the installation, maintenance, and design of military and emergency mobile field equipment). Together, we have designed, built, and demonstrated a prototype of three habitable modules that combines hydrogen production and storage in a temporary building.
The results obtained are a clear endorsement of the commitment to hydrogen and renewable energies as a pillar for future habitability. The project has achieved:
- Demonstrating an 85% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional solutions.
- Producing over 15,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) exclusively from renewable sources.
- Achieving savings in the use of over 17,000 liters of diesel annually.
- Avoiding the emission of 45 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 0.6 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) annually into the atmosphere.
The project has demonstrated that the technology is ready for real-world applications, both civil and military, improving comfort and habitability compared to current solutions, such as those used in military bases. This industrialized and modular (containerized) building has clear practical applications beyond the military sphere, including energy backup in hospitals or its use in social and humanitarian projects.
The project’s completion coincides with the conference “Sustainable architecture and renewables: the future with its own energy,” an event organized by Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón at the Official College of Quantity Surveyors and Technical Architects of Zaragoza on May 29th. The conference, which featured the participation of the Director General for Industrial Promotion and Innovation of the Government of Aragon, Mar Paños, served to present the excellent results of LIFE Zero Energy Mod and witnessed the recognition granted to the project by the Official College of Quantity Surveyors and Technical Architects of Zaragoza itself.
At Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón, we are enormously satisfied to have coordinated a European project that places Aragon at the forefront of innovation in sustainable habitability solutions and demonstrates a major step towards energy independence without fossil fuels. We continue to drive the development and application of hydrogen as a key vector in the energy transition.
