Europe Drives Hydrogen Mobility: IH-MIE 2026 Open Call to Fund 30 SME Innovation Projects
The deployment of the hydrogen economy across the European continent faces a decisive milestone for the industrial and entrepreneurial fabric. Within the framework of the energy transition and the decarbonization of transport, the European project IH-MIE (Interregional Hydrogen Mobility Initiative for Europe) has announced the upcoming launch of its official 2026 Open Call. This strategic initiative is specifically designed to fund and support innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) leading the transition toward sustainable mobility.
This funding line will select up to 30 technological innovation projects. Beneficiary SMEs will gain access to a comprehensive support package, including specialized mentoring, advanced training, technical assistance, and 100% funding of up to €60,000 under a lump-sum modality. The core objective is to accelerate the technological readiness of viable solutions, elevating systems from an experimental prototype stage (TRL 6) to market validation and introduction (TRL 9) within a strict 12-month timeframe.
Six Strategic Challenges for the Hydrogen Value Chain
The IH-MIE 2026 Open Call stands out for its technology-neutral approach, welcoming a wide array of innovative solutions provided they address at least one of the six grand challenges identified within the sector:
-
Cost reduction in fuel cell manufacturing and components.
-
Optimization and deployment of refueling infrastructure (hydrogen stations).
-
Advanced technologies for hydrogen storage.
-
Efficiency in distribution systems.
-
Strengthening the supply chain and logistics.
-
Integration of hydrogen with other complementary mobility solutions.
Eligibility Criteria and Territorial Cohesion
The call is exclusively targeted at SMEs established in EU Member States or European Economic Area (EEA) countries. Standard business structures may apply individually or as part of small consortia of up to three SMEs.
As a distinctive element to foster socio-economic balance across Europe, the evaluation criteria will grant explicit priority to companies located in Less Developed Regions (LDRs). This mechanism aims to boost territorial cohesion, turning these regions into active hubs for technological innovation in clean energy.
