Aragon Hydrogen Foundation drives urban mobility at the 5th Hy2Market assembly
The European consortium gathered in Gijón (Asturias) to review regional hydrogen ecosystem milestones and integrate Aragon’s new hydrogen taxi pilot.
The development of a functional, real-world European hydrogen economy continues to hit key milestones with distinct Aragonese leadership. On May 5–6, 2026, the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation actively participated in the fifth consortium meeting of the European Hy2Market project, held in Gijón, Spain. This hybrid gathering brought together over 60 experts from 35 international organisations to consolidate regional clean hydrogen ecosystems across the continent.
Regulatory barriers and infrastructure retrofitting
The opening sessions, hosted by the Asturian Energy Foundation (FAEN) and led by Project Coordinator Dirk Koppert, focused on project governance (WP1) and addressed critical standardization and regulatory bottlenecks. Hy2Market’s core ambition extends beyond merely demonstrating hydrogen technologies; it actively aims to shape the regulatory frameworks required for commercial scalability. In parallel, technical updates on compression and hydrogen blending in peaker turbines were presented by regional partners from Sicily and the Netherlands.
A major highlight of the technical gathering was the site visit to the EDP Aboño power plant. Consortium partners—joined by the regional Vice-Minister of Industry for Asturias, Juan Carlos Campo—witnessed firsthand the large-scale industrial conversion of the legacy coal plant to burn and distribute green hydrogen, marking a flagship example of a just energy transition.
Aragon leads the new urban mobility pilot: Hydrogen Taxis
The final technical block of the assembly focused on hydrogen mobility rollouts in regions like Austria, Portugal, and Romania. Within this framework, the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation took center stage by officially introducing its new urban mobility pilot for the Aragon region: the hydrogen taxi initiative.
This tactical deployment strengthens the geopolitical positioning of the Aragon hydrogen ecosystem within the European Union’s energy map. It provides a tangible demonstration of hydrogen’s technical viability and immediate decarbonization impact on daily municipal public transport.
Sectoral Impact: “Building a competitive European hydrogen market demands seamless cooperation between industry, research institutions, and regional governments. Hy2Market demonstrates that hydrogen infrastructure is rapidly moving from industrial testing grounds directly to municipal streets.”
The meeting concluded with feedback from EU Project Officer Maja Ferlinc, guiding the consortium into a final phase designed to anchor the foundations of European industrial decarbonization.
