Aragon reinforces leadership: New Memorandum of Understanding to propel Europe’s hydrogen future from the regions

Aragon Hydrogen Foundation celebrates the agreement between Hydrogen Europe and the Government of Aragon. This strategic alliance revalidates the essential role of regions in driving energy security, industrial competitiveness, and the large-scale deployment of H₂ technology across the continent.

Europe’s energy future will be decided in its regions. And today, that leadership has been formally recognized.

Aragon Hydrogen Foundation is proud to announce the recent signing of a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that places regional collaboration at the heart of Europe’s hydrogen strategy. The agreement was signed by Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, and Mar Paños, Director General of Industrial Promotion and Innovation for the Government of Aragon.

Recognizing the regional powerhouse

This Memorandum of Understanding underscores the critical role played by regions, such as Aragon, in accelerating decarbonisation, enhancing energy security, and boosting European competitiveness globally.

The partnership between Hydrogen Europe and the Directorate General of Industrial Promotion and Innovation for the Government of Aragon is not merely a statement of intent; it is a strategic mandate. It broadens the scope of collaboration to directly address the specific challenges faced by the local hydrogen industry, ranging from creating hydrogen hubs to adapting crucial infrastructure.

Direct collaboration for large-scale deployment

The agreement aims to foster closer and more direct collaboration between local authorities (like the Government of Aragon) and the industrial and R&D fabric (like FHa).

For the Foundation, this MoU reaffirms its work as the key connection point between the technology developed in Aragon and the political agenda in Brussels. It enables the region to:

  1. Accelerate adoption: Drive the large-scale deployment of hydrogen technologies, transitioning pilot projects into industrial scale.
  2. Tailored solutions: Work jointly to adapt European regulatory frameworks to the specific needs and capabilities of leading regions.
  3. Strategic positioning: Ensure that the knowledge and expertise held by Aragon—a reference point in electrolysers and fuel cells—directly influences continental strategy.

Hydrogen is no longer a distant promise; it is an unavoidable reality. This agreement proves that the leadership of Europe, and of Aragon, is being built through coordinated and ambitious regional action.
