Aragon and Scotland renew strategic alliance to lead renewable hydrogen
Zaragoza has become the meeting point for a delegation of Scottish companies from the renewable hydrogen sector, as part of a mission organized by Hydrogen Scotland and coordinated by the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (FHa).
The visit, which took place on March 24 and 25, 2026, highlighted the growing international interest in the Aragonese hydrogen ecosystem and served to consolidate a historic collaboration dating back to 2015.
The mission aims to strengthen cooperation between both territories, explore new opportunities for innovation and technological development, and advance the creation of shared value chains. Scotland considers Spain a priority market within its hydrogen export plan, granting Aragon a strategic role in this bilateral dialogue.
Renewal of the MoU between FHa and Hydrogen Scotland
The central institutional act took place on March 24 at the Government of Aragon headquarters, where the delegation was received by Mar Paños, Director General for Industrial Promotion and Innovation. During the session, Aragon’s strategic priorities were presented alongside synergies with Scotland, a territory equally committed to the energy transition.
A key milestone was the signing of the renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation and Hydrogen Scotland Ltd. This agreement will enable continued progress in joint R&D projects, sustainable mobility, energy infrastructure, and industrial development.
According to Mar Paños, this collaboration “is vital to maintaining Aragon’s position as a European benchmark. The pioneering nature of our community places us as a leader, and we must stay on this path.”
Nigel Holmes, CEO of Hydrogen Scotland, emphasized that this new agreement will facilitate the exchange of experiences and the implementation of best practices to accelerate the deployment of clean hydrogen technologies in both regions.
A Journey Through Aragon’s Industrial Hydrogen Ecosystem
Over two intensive days, the mission visited several key sites:
-
Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (FHa): The delegation explored our production, storage, and testing facilities, as well as pilot projects showcasing the ecosystem’s maturity.
-
Kalfrisa: Where they explored thermal engineering solutions and combustion systems adapted for hydrogen and natural gas blends.
-
ARPA: Specialized in modular and deployable systems for mobile applications and remote environments.
-
Calvera Hydrogen: A European leader in high-pressure transport, storage, and the development of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS).
-
Zoilo Ríos: Visiting one of Spain’s first hydrogen stations integrated into a multi-energy hub.
-
Enagás: Presenting progress on Spain’s future hydrogen backbone and its new H₂ metrology laboratory.
International Cooperation Looking to the Future
The FHa highlights that this mission reinforces the shared commitment of Aragon and Scotland to decarbonization. The MoU renewal and the extensive site visits demonstrate the sector’s dynamism and the drive to continue promoting joint projects in production, mobility, and industrial applications.
