Webinar on hydrogen safety brings together professionals from various countries

Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, in collaboration with BEQUINOR and the National Hydrogen Centre (CNH2), successfully held a webinar dedicated to hydrogen safety, which featured the participation of attendees from multiple countries.

On November 28th, the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation organized the webinar “Real Safety, Not Just Regulatory: Our Field Experience,” an event that exceeded participation expectations and generated a rich debate on one of the most critical aspects of the energy transition: safety in handling hydrogen.

International scope of the call

The session was attended by sector professionals from various countries, highlighting the presence of participants from Uruguay, Chile, Spain, and other regions of Latin America and Europe. This confirms the global interest in advancements in hydrogen safety and the international recognition of the organizing institutions as leaders in the field.

Shared experiences and knowledge

The webinar structured its content into five thematic blocks that addressed both the scientific foundations and the practical application of safety protocols in industrial and research environments.

Is hydrogen dangerous?

Miguel Ángel Fernández Sánchez, Manager of the National Hydrogen Centre (CNH2), opened the session by tackling the question many ask: Is hydrogen dangerous? Through a rigorous and accessible explanation, he debunked common myths and offered a comparison with other frequently used industrial gases, contextualizing real risks versus unfounded perceptions.

Safety in the workshop: Practical experience

The session continued with presentations by Sira Almarcegui Gracia, Safety Specialist at the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, and Natalia Díaz Rodríguez, Labour Risk Prevention Technician at CNH2, who shared accumulated experience in the day-to-day operations of their facilities.

Sira explained the specifics of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation workshop, designed as a living safety laboratory, where every protocol and procedure is designed to guarantee safe, responsible, and efficient operations.

Natalia, for her part, presented practical cases and lessons learned at the CNH2 facilities, demonstrating that safety is not just read in a manual: it is practiced, perfected, and lived every day in environments where experimentation and validation are constant.

Collaboration in projects

The Aragon Hydrogen Foundation dedicated a block to explaining how safety is integrated transversally into all their collaboration projects with companies and European consortia. Real examples of specialized consultancy and the implementation of best practices in innovative environments were presented, showing that safety is not an afterthought but a strategic axis from design to operation.

Regulations and technical guides: BEQUINOR’s work

The last block featured the participation of three BEQUINOR experts who addressed the regulatory challenges in a constantly evolving technological sector:

Rosa Sánchez, Director of BEQUINOR, explained the complexity of updating regulations in a changing technological environment and the progress achieved in developing safety guides that are already a reference in the sector.

Juan Santos, Director of the Industrial Safety Division at INERCO and a member of the BEQUINOR Hydrogen Safety Committee, detailed how safety is managed in a hydrogen project and the fundamental role played by the BEQUINOR Guide in this process.

Rosario Trimiño, from the Engineering Division at INERCO and the BEQUINOR Hydrogen Safety Committee, presented advancements in the technical instruction for hydrogen storage, including design criteria, risk acceptability, and harmonization with main international references.
